The Power of Observation with Dinusha Joseph
3 Saturday sessions, 1.30pm - 4.30pm in the studio
16, 23 & 30 August, 2025.
Perfect for beginners, experienced painters, and non-painters alike, this is an excellent opportunity to explore abstract compositions and develop new skills.
Session one – Using Colour as Mood
Exploring colour mixing and use of tone to create mood.
Looking broadly for inspiration in colour including nature, landscape design, built environment and other artists including Rothko.
Creation of own work based on a palette reflecting the seasons, as a basis for mood.
Session two – Mark Making
Techniques for creating effective marks and discussion of how to make strong and soft marks within a work and create interest.
Consideration of the idea of balance and negative space within a painting.
Use of repetition within a painting.
Creation of own work utilising these techniques.
Session three – Working with a Photo Image in Abstract Form
Some photos to be provided as resource materials and participants also encouraged to bring their own.
Looking closely at colour and form in an image as a trigger to your own creativity.
Extracting elements of form from within an image and using techniques such as adding and subtracting to make it your own.
Begin to generate ideas and inspiration from the world around and improvise from these.
All classes will open with a discussion based on resource materials such as photos or work from other artsts in selected reference books. There will also be a brief demonstraton exercise, prior to partcipants doing their own work and receiving individual feedback.
Emphasis on the spirit of experimentaton underlying the practice. Discussion of how to further explore while paintng at home.
