About Hawthorn Artist Society

Hawthorn Artist Society is a nonprofit Incorporated Association run for artists by artists. Governed by an elected Committee, our goal is to encourage, support and promote the local artist community by providing opportunities for artistic expression in a safe, inclusive, respectful and comfortable environment.

We have a proud history spanning over forty years, during which time many hundreds of artists - including some of Australia’s most distinguished - have worked, studied, lectured and participated in activities at our studios, located in the Basement under Hawthorn Arts Centre.

All of our Studio spaces are readily accessible by ramp and close proximity to accessible toilets.

We support a wide range of artistic expression, from lifedrawing and painting (figurative and abstract) to printing, sculpture and collage, through term based classes and short-term workshops held on site.

Multiple tutored and untutored sessions are currently available throughout the week and weekends. These range from long-pose (running over several weeks) and short-pose gestural sessions with life models, to ‘open studio’ sessions, allowing artists the freedom to do their own thing in our studios. En Plein Air events are also held monthly around metropolitan Melbourne, and our curriculum is rounded off by periodic lectures by successful professional artists. We also run a members-only exhibitions annually.
