Hawthorn Artist Society presents a group exhibition of one subject by many artists.
The subject is a life model that often works with the society. As the model has been rendered in many different poses over time, this exhibition describes his form - torso, head, hands and limbs - as they appealed individually to the artists.
Featuring paintings and drawings in a variety of media, the exhibition is a comprehensive description of a single subject by many observers.

Her sculptures focus on emotional vulnerability and personal / cultural identity. Ede thinks of herself as a storyteller. In her work she looks for ways from an historical perspective to talk about how, through the generations, we deal not only with change but how we recognise and retain the richness of our memories and rituals that thread consistently through our lives and define who are.

Phil Kreveld’s exhibition references his cultural heritage and universal themes. Phil said that one’s voyage through life is perceived looking back, and that his paintings look back through his Jewish roots becoming distinguishable, impelling him to reflect on διασπορα (diaspora). Originally referring to the scattering of Jews, he attempts to show that cultural heritage and shared humanity more than native soil not only define us, but create bonds we break at our peril.

Still life painting with Lewis Miller
The art of still life is not quite as old as the world, but getting there. Its art forms are many and varied—think of Jean Gris, Morandi, Matisse, the Flemish masters, like van Ostade, Flinck, etc. Lewis, an Australian artist with an international following, is well-known for his portraiture but he is also engrossed in the still life form of quiet contemplation where his mastery of technique combined with sensitivity crystallises into jewel-like, sparkling observations. Sharpen your skills and gain new insights in the art still life painting

Hawthorn Artist Society is moving into a new phase of development in our new home. We can now tell the community about what we offer, attracting new members and new events. To help us do this, HAS will have marquees at the Glenferrie Festival 5 March.
Say hello to your fellow members at the marquee and have a great day at the festival!
Capturing the essence of the figure in watercolour is challenging. The best watercolours, to me are confident and direct, with a bold use of color. Learning to see and identify color and it’s temperature will make our job a bit easier. We will spend some time constructing a solid figure drawing working on simplifying form. The addition of clothing will add some colour punch and drawing challenges. Learning to mix good colour, playing with dramatic lighting and interesting poses should make a pleasurable experience with watercolour.
Class commences Tuesday, 14 February, and runs for three further consecutive Tuesday sessions till 7 March, times 10 AM till 1 PM. Venue: HAS studio, Hawthorn Arts Centre, 360 Burwood Rd, Hawthorn 3122 Cost for members, $200 Cost for non-members $250
